Adult, Two Minors Displaced After Discarded Smoking Material Leads To Maryland Townhouse Fire

A family of three was displaced from their La Plata home when an accidental fire broke out when smoking materials were haphazardly discarded, according to the Maryland State Fire Marshal.

Members of the La Plata Volunteer Fire Department were dispatched to a Patient Court home shortly after 12:15 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 25, for a reported fire on the outside of an area townhouse.

Officials said that a team of 20 firefighters was able to quickly control the fire in five minutes, but it caused $5,000 in damages to the structure. 

A woman and two minors were displaced as a result of the incident and are being assisted by the American Red Cross, according to the fire marshal.

The initial investigation deemed the fire to be accidental and caused by improperly discarded smoking materials.

No injuries were reported.
